The Jacket Crown is one of the most prominent fixed prosthetic options of the 21st century. It is a revolution in the world of cosmetic dentistry, as it allows the replacement of the visible part of the tooth with an alternative that is faithful to the natural appearance of the teeth. Nowadays, the Jacket Crown makes it possible to recreate real teeth with features that are as close as possible to the functional and physiological aspects of the missing teeth (or the tooth substance to be replaced). At Chahd Dental Clinic, this type of crownis frequently placed by Dr. Khiter Taha and Dr. Rouabah Hadia with perfect final results.
What is a Crown Jacket?
In most cases, a prosthetic treatment will be indicated (especially when there is a significant loss of tooth substance, due to a cavity or a fracture, or a discoloration affecting the entire natural dental crown). When it comes to anterior teeth, the most important thing to consider is the visible aspect, which must be flawless. For this reason, modern technology has developed a cosmetic prosthetic device, namely the Jacket Crown.
Made entirely of cosmetic material, the Jacket Crown is the preferred treatment for restoring the visible part of the teeth located in the anterior part of the mouth (which appears when smiling).
The material in this case can be either resin or ceramic. The latter must be of medium fusion (a sintering or firing temperature of 1090° to 1260° is specific to the Jacket crown) with 40% alumina component. However, several other types of ceramics can be found in a Jacket crown, including zirconia and glass-ceramics. The material chosen must be biocompatible with the surrounding tissue and be tolerated by it. This material must not corrode when in contact with oral fluids, which can sometimes have a certain degree of acidity.
The Jacket crown, as any other dental crown, is intended to be placed either on a natural tooth stump or on an implant. The stump is the result of preparing the natural tooth on the arch (in the mouth) in order to give it a specific convex shape that will adapt to the concave infrastructure (interior) of the prosthetic crown, like the tenon-mortaise concept or the Legos concept!
What are the benefits of the Jacket Crown?
- Choosing a Jacket crown is purely cosmetic! It offers an impressive visual result with optical features that faithfully reproduce the light phenomena of the natural tooth surface.
- The shade of Jacket crowns closely resembles that of the surrounding teeth, making it difficult to tell the difference between the natural teeth and the prosthetic crown.
- Since this treatment option does not require the use of metal alloys, the casting procedure is avoided, making the treatment process much easier.
- They have an excellent biocompatibility with the surrounding environment.
- They can last a very long time in the mouth without deteriorating, as long as several years!
- Pulp vitality is preserved. It is not necessary to remove the dental nerve to proceed with the placement of the crown.
- In case of using a resin as cosmetic material, the tooth size is slightly reduced when sculpting it into a stump.
What is the placement procedure of a Jacket crown?
After a thorough clinical examination, Dr. Khiter Taha or Dr. Rouabah Hadia will choose the Jacket Crown as a prosthetic treatment, depending on the case at hand. X-rays may be requested and a first impression will be taken. X-rays may be requested and a first impression will be taken.
The secondstep consists of sculpting the tooth in order to obtain a dental stump that can receive the prosthetic crown. This step is also referred to as the “preparation of the stump”.
Subsequently, Dr. Khiter Taha or Dr. Rouabah Hadia will take a second impression using a suitable technique and materials, after that they apply a protective varnish layer on the stump. The impression will then be sent to the Lab ,which will make the Jacket Crown and send it back to Chahd Dental Clinic.
While waiting to receive the prosthetic, a temporary crown that does not fulfill all the requirements of a final prosthetic will be used to temporarily and partially cover the functions of the missing tooth or natural crown.
The final step is to try the Jacket crown in the mouth and then cement it to the stump. It must match closely with the dental preparation.
Chahd Dental Clinic has been performing this type of treatment for years with excellent final results and great feedback from patients. Dr. Khiter Taha and Dr. Rouabah Hadia remain attentive to the needs of their patients and are fully committed to offering them the best possible treatment and giving them the confidence to smile again!
